Tips for Sweet-Smelling Breath in Smithfield NC

HidingMouthSmWe’ve all experienced the embarrassment of having bad breath, a well as the unpleasantness of being around others who have it! Unfortunately, occasional bad breath is a fact of life. But there are ways to control bad breath (medically known as halitosis). Smithfield NC dentist Dr. James Oldham discusses the causes of bad breath and give you tips to address it.

Causes of Bad Breath

When the bacteria that are always present in your mouth begin to break down, they can emit sulfur compounds, which are smelly. A dry mouth contributes to bad breath because there’s not enough saliva to wash away bacteria and minimize mouth odor. Certain medical conditions, such as acid reflux and respiratory issues can contribute to bad breath. Dental-related causes include gum disease, ill-fitting dentures, and deteriorating dental work, such as cracked fillings.

Treating Bad Breath

If your bad breath is caused by an oral-related issue, Dr. Oldham can determine the cause and recommend appropriate treatment. Dental cleanings and oral antibiotic therapy are non-invasive remedies for halitosis caused by gum disease. Poorly fitted dentures can be addressed to improve comfort and fit, and failing dental work can be assessed and replaced.

Tips you can try at home to remedy occasional bouts of bad breath include:

  • Sip water throughout the day to keep your mouth hydrate
  • Munch on crunchy vegetables (they act as natural toothbrushes)
  • Drink green tea
  • Brush and floss after meals and snacks, if possible
  • Drink water after meals and snacks if you can’t brush and floss
  • Cut back on coffee and alcohol, which can dry out the mouth
  • Chew sugarless gum
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco products
